The Art of Deep Work in a Distracted World
Reclaiming Your Attention
Last week, I deleted social media apps from my phone. It's been seven days, and I don't miss it.
The Problem
We're living through an attention crisis. The average person checks their phone 96 times a day - once every 10 minutes. We're constantly interrupted, constantly distracted, constantly skimming the surface.
What I've Been Trying
Time Blocking
I've started scheduling 2-hour blocks for deep work. No email, no Slack, no phone. Just me and the problem I'm trying to solve.
The first few times were painful. I felt anxious, bored, restless. But as I stuck with it, something shifted. I started doing my best work during these blocks.
Digital Minimalism
I've been ruthless about removing apps that don't serve a clear purpose. No social media on the phone. No news apps. Email only at designated times.
The Results
It's been two months, and the changes are profound:
- I'm reading more books
- My code is better thought through
- I feel less anxious and more in control
- I'm actually bored sometimes - which turns out to be great for creativity
The Challenge
This week, try scheduling one 90-minute block of distraction-free time. Turn off notifications. Put your phone in another room. See what happens.
You might be surprised at what you can accomplish.
